A Simple and Affordable Approach to Learning to Read
The only thing the literacy-challenged student needs to know before launching into the Mature Reading Instruction (MRI) stories is the Basic Alphabetic Code. The tutor/teacher merely needs to run through the Sound Check at the beginning of Level 1, correcting each error immediately, as often as necessary until this knowledge is secure. Then turn to the first story and clearly explain each new phoneme/grapheme correspondence that is being introduced. Then launch straight into the first story, with the instruction 'Say the sounds and read the word.'
The MRI Lesson Plans also provide an abundance of comprehension and discussion questions, storyboarding, oracy, prosody, spelling, vocabulary development, phoneme breakdown, sentence reworking, syllable chunking, word chains, crosswords, and recall quizzes. These are helpful in enhancing a learner's understanding but are not mandatory, as the essence of MRI is learning to read via meticulously-sequenced text.
