3RsPlus SPELL Instructors' Handbook aligns with BRI-ARI instruction.
Just as BRI builds on the child’s spoken language assets, SPELL builds
on the skills that she/he is steadily acquiring in reading. BRI-ARI instruction
regularly increases the number of letter/sound correspondences the
child can handle. SPELL instruction slightly lags
BRI-ARI instruction. That is, the child first learns
to use specific letter/sound correspondences to read words fluently
with BRI-ARI instruction. The child is able then to reverse the process
and generate the sounds that lead to accurate spelling of an increasing
vocabulary. This repertoire increases exponentially to the point that
the child can spell more than 10,000 words and write anything he/she
wishes to communicate, using auxiliary sources when unsure of the spelling
of a word.
BRI-ARI uses the protocol 'Say the sounds and read the word.' SPELL uses a parallel protocol, 'Think the sounds, and write the letters.' 'Think the sounds' would not have any meaning but for BRI instruction. But BRI-instructed children have been doing this from the very beginning. With this foundation, spelling is essentially reduced to a mechanical matter of writing the letters rather than memorizing words individually. Some word-specific memory is still involved for Advanced Code words. But the number of individual elements the child has to recall is very dramatically reduced.
An Instructors' Handbook SPELL accompanies BRI and a further Handbook aligns with ARI. A common template is used for each set:
- An alphabetic list of all of the words in a segment of BRI or set of ARI with words encountered in the books asterisked. This is for reference purposes.
- A scrambled randomized list of words encountered in the books in the given segment/set. These are listed for purposes of dictation.
- A scrambled list of all the words in the segment. Also for dictation.
- Sentence dictation. A list of sentences heavily weighted with the words in a given segment/set of BRI-ARI.
The lists are photocopiable.
For each section of BRI Sets 1–3, and ARI Sets 1–5, there is
a 16-page A5 SPELLING STUDY LIST for children to
use at home, either to demonstrate the words he/she can spell or
to involve parents in homework. The SPELLING STUDY LISTS can
also be used by TAs.
Both levels of the Instructors' Handbook SPELL and
accompanying SPELLING STUDY LISTS serve an additional
purpose. They provide a means of ensuring that a child is generalizing
the handling of taught correspondences to 'all words' and not just
those encountered in the books.
The Instructors' Handbook SPELL for ARI serves a final purpose
of rendering transparent the 'scope and sequence' of ARI instruction.
This is clear by inspection in BRI, but the 'anatomy' for ARI is displayed
in the SPELL lists.

The Reading/Spelling Mastery Tests (RSMTs) provide a systematic means of recording the cumulative progress of an individual child’s proficiency, recording results in an easy-to-interpret format.
Three parallel forms (A.B.C.) correspond to each half-level of BRI Sets 1-3, and each level of ARI instruction, and mark pupils current progress. The RSMTs, in total, constitute a scale reflecting 10 cumulative levels of reading/spelling acquisition and provide valuable diagnostic instructional information in addition to assessment results.
